The course is a vocational programme that will develop your current levels of skill and introduce you to new areas of drama. The overall emphasis of the course is on learning by doing, developing a practical understanding of the performing arts in a broad sense. The Diploma enables students to follow a workshop and production based course that aims to give you a basic grounding in the process of performance and production. It is a 90 credit qual in the first year leading to the Extended Diploma

What you need to know
How will I study?

Each tutor will advise you on the particular unit content, delivery plan, homework, assignments and assessment. All assessments count towards your final unit grade. Depending on the unit you will be set between 1 and 3 assignments for each unit you take. You will study a wide range and variety of topics during the year one as follows below. Performance Workshop: You will study in a practical way a specific text and devise your own piece of original work based around its themes and issues. Performing to an Audience: The aim of this unit is to give learners experience of performing a role as part of an ensemble presenting rehearsed work to a live audience in the River Side Theatre. Contemporary Theatre Performance: This unit looks at the movements in dramatic writing from 1930 to the present day with interest in how they might be interpreted and performed. Other units you will study, Principals of Acting, Developing Voice for Actor, Improvisation, Physical Theatre.
How will I be taught?

The delivery of the course is essentially practically based but your contributions/submissions will include the following: Logbooks/scrapbooks, Research portfolios, Note taking, Class room discussion/debates, Evaluative essay writing, Group based practical projects, Full scale productions in the theatre, theatre trips, small scale touring to local schools.
How will I be assessed?

Each unit will have an assessment and the core units shall be externally examined. The assessments range from participation in practical work that will include group and solo projects, written submissions and the quality of your acting skills in a practical sense.
