About this course
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 GCSEs (A*- D) and have a strong interest in the area of health and fitness. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the work based learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in English and maths. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement in a health and fitness environment.

Course programme
This course is designed for those leading activity sessions in sport and active leisure, offering taster recreational sessions, or leading an outdoor activity.
The course combines developing your practical and theoretical skills at College, together with experience gained in the workplace.
What will I Learn?
NVQ Certificate in Activity Leadership Level 2, units include:
- Prepare for an Activity Session
- Lead an Activity Session
- Conclude and Review an Activity Session
- Support the Work of Your Team and Organisation
- Promote Health, Safety and Welfare
- Support Equality and Diversity
- Give Customers a Positive Impression of Yourself and Your Organisation
- Set Up, Take Down and Store Activity Equipment
Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning Level 2
Portfolio of evidence plus units in:
- Understanding the Active Leisure and Learning Sector
- Understanding the Employing Organisation
Pathway 1: Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport Level 2
Units include:
- Fundamentals of Coaching Sport
- Developing Participants Through Coaching
- Supporting Participants’ Lifestyle through Coaching Sport
- Safe Coaching Practice
Pathway 2: Fitness Instructing (Gym Based) Level 2
Units include:
- Evaluate and Develop Own Practice
- Motivate and Support Clients tp Develop and Maintain their Fitness
- Plan and Prepare Gym-based Activities with Clients
- Instruct, Observe and Assist Gym-based Activities
As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths.

What next?
Possible progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship. Following further training and development, career pathways may include progression to specialist roles in activity leadership, outdoor or fitness instructing and sports coaching.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.

ready to complete your apprenticeship with.
