Course programme

Places available in Clearing - How to apply Overview

The Foundation Year in Mathematics is a one-year full-time programme validated by City University London as an entry route to a number of BSc degrees in the areas of Mathematics and Actuarial Science. The Foundation Year in Mathematics aims to provide students with a knowledge of Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Economics, I.T. and Computing sufficient to enable them to undertake an undergraduate degree in the area of Actuarial Science.

In addition to providing students with the essential mathematical and scientific background necessary to commence one of the above courses, there is an integrated study and communication skills component. This, together with considerable tutorial support, aims to encourage the development of the students' awareness of the learning process and to foster their intellectual development, in order that they achieve a sense of their competence as learners.

The Foundation Degree will lead on to only the BSc Actuarial Science degree and not any other undergraduate programmes at Cass Business School.

This course is currently subject to University approval

Course content

The Foundation year is intended to provide students with pure mathematical skills equivalent to A-level further maths and a broader introduction to Statistics, IT and Economics.

Modules are organised into two levels of difficulty according to the work they contain:

Core Modules:will cover the essential elements of the course component needed to form a basis for further study. These modules are pure mathematics, computational mathematics, statistics, economics and IT.

Further Modules: will build on the work covered in the Core Modules and develop the subject matter in greater depth. The advanced module in statistics will cover much of the material in the A-level statistical modules, while the advanced modules in pure mathematics will cover material from the pure syllabi of A-level mathematics and A-level further mathematics.
