Drivers can refresh their ADR Certificate in the modules they hold within 12 months before expiry without losing any time entitlement. E.g. if the current ADR Certificate is valid until 1st April 2012, a driver can carry out an ADR Refresher course from 2nd April 2011 and if successful, the new ADR Certificate will be valid until 1st April 2017.

Please note that SQA will not process any examinations if there is less than 5 weeks between the examination date and the expiry date.

Drivers can refresh their ADR Certificate in the modules they hold earlier than 12 months before expiry but the new ADR Certificate will be valid for 5 years from the date of processing by SQA and DVLA.

About this course

Everyone driving vehicles carrying dangerous goods on domestic or international roads must have in their possession a current ADR Certificate which is valid for the dangerous classes being carried and the type of vehicle being driven.

Drivers carrying dangerous goods in Road Tankers with a capacity greater than 1000 litres need the ""In tanks"" specialisation.

Drivers carrying dangerous goods in Tank Containers with a capacity greater than 3000 litres need the""In tanks"" specialisation.

All other drivers need the ""Other than in tanks"" ADR Certificate (Drivers carrying dangerous Goods in packages may not need an ADR Certificate. However, they still need DANGEROUS GOODS AWARENESS)

Everyone involved in the carriage of dangerous goods need to show competence. This includes drivers carrying product ""Excepted Quantities"", ""Limited Quantities"" or in quantities below the LOAD THRESHOLD.

Your Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser will be able to explain when this type of training is suitable.

Course programme

The ADR course is modular depending on the type of danger (U.N. CLASSES), the receptacle and thetype of vehicle.

If the driver is carrying 7 Common U.N. Classes (All U.N.Classes except Explosives and Radioactives) in packages, the driver needs to attend the course with the following modules:
Core, Other than In tanks and 7 Common Classes (5 multiple choice SQA exams)

If the driver is carrying 7 Common U.N. Classes (All U.N.Classes except Explosives and Radioactives) in a Road Tanker, the driver needs to attend the course with the following modules:
Core, In tanks and 7 U.N.Common Classes (5 multiple choice SQA exams)

If the driver is carrying 7 Common U.N. Classes (All U.N.Classes except Explosives and Radioactives) in Road Tanker and/or in packages, the driver needs to attend the course with the following modules:
Core, In tanks, Other than In tanks and 7 U.N. Common Classes (6 multiple choice SQA exams)

If the driver is carrying flammable liquids in a RoadTanker, the driver needs to attend the course with the following modules:
Core, In tanks and U.N. Class 3 (3 multiple choice SQA exams)

If the driver is carrying gases in cylinders, the driver needs to attend the course with the following modules:
Core, Other than In tanks and U.N. Class 2 (3 multiple choice SQA exams)
