Course Details
Apprenticeships are employment led programmes designed for young people aged 16 - 24. You will have a job where you will earn real wages and combine this with learning technical skills. You will also come to College usually for one day per week for off the job training and to learn underpinning knowledge. We offer a number of Advanced Apprenticeships in Engineering.

This leaflet contains information about the Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering (Electrical Maintenance), designed for those who want to specialise Electrical Maintenance. Types of job you might have to do this course would be a Maintenance Electrician or Shift Electrician.

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering (Electrical Maintenance) qualification is made up of the following components; you must achieve all components to receive an Advanced Apprenticeship Award.

Length of Study
Normally up to two years, depending on your previous experience.


Is the Course for Me?
To succeed in an Advanced Apprenticeship programme you need to be focused on the career you have chosen. You will need to be prepared to work hard both within the workplace and at College so that you get the best out of the opportunities to learn.

Ideally you will have already found employment with an employer who is willing to support you through the Advanced Apprenticeship programme. If you haven't already found an employer then the College will support you in looking for suitable employment. You must be in employment in order to undertake the Apprenticeship programme.

Entry requirements for Advanced Apprenticeships are flexible. Practical skills count and your interest in the area of work you've chosen. You must be keen to work and keen to learn. Advanced Apprentices in Engineering are required to have an NVQ 2 in Performing Engineering Operations and Key Skills before commencing the Advanced Apprenticeship.


How will I Study?
You will normally attend College one day per week to learn the underpinning knowledge required for your framework components. Practical skills will be developed through a combination of study at College and of activities that you will undertake in your workplace.

Assessment will be via observation, written tests and assignments. An assessor from College will visit you in the workplace on a regular basis to carry out assessments for your NVQ award. You will be required to compile evidence for your NVQ portfolio from the workplace.


How will my Progress be Measured?
Your progress on the programme will be reviewed a minimum of every 10 - 12 weeks. This is normally done in your workplace. Targets will be set that reflect your individual needs. Previous learning, training and experience can be taken into consideration.


Progression
On completion of an Advanced Apprenticeship your career prospects will have significantly improved and you can progress to supervisory or management positions in the industry. You might also choose to progress to further study with a HNC or Foundation Degree.

This Apprenticeship is approved by the Institute of Engineering and Technology. When you achieve this qualification you should be able to join the IET and register as an Engineering Technician. This would allow you to use the designation 'Eng Tech' after your name. Further study could lead to registration as either an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
