The Advanced Apprenticeship in Health (Dental Nursing) is specifically for those who are seeking a career in Dental Nursing. Dental Nurses can be employed in general practice, hospitals or community dental services. The role of a Dental Nurse is regulated by the General Dental Council, and achievement of the Dental Nursing qualification within the Advanced Apprenticeship enables registration with this Council. The Apprenticeship includes units relating to the following: first aid essentials; reducing risks to health and safety in the dental setting; the role and responsibilities of a dental nurse; preparing and maintaining environments, instruments, and equipment for clinical dental procedures; principles of infection control in the dental environment; providing chairside support for a wide range of dental procedures; contributing to the production of dental images; providing information and support to patients on the protection of their oral health; assessment of oral health and treatment planning; management of oral health diseases and dental procedures; dental radiography. You will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing and a Level 3 Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health. Unless exempt on entry, you will also achieve Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths.You will learn through a combination of on- and off-the-job training. You will attend college on a day release basis during term time and spend the rest of your time earning and learning in the workplace. You will be assessed on a continuous basis through a combination of knowledge and practical assessment activities, including assessment of activities in the workplace. The Apprenticeship has a minimum duration of 24 months unless you are aged 19 or older and have undertaken relevant prior learning. Your progress will be continuously monitored and supported by an Apprenticeship Achievement Officer.
