This Qualification is part of the Apprenticeship in Horticulture. An Apprenticeship is an excellent way to earn money whilst gaining hands on practical work experience. It is a work-related, competence-based qualification, and is designed for someone in work or who wishes to progress into work. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and shows that you are competent in the area of work the qualification represents.At level 3 we would expect that you've worked in the horticulture industry for some time you have plenty of experience, and you might already supervise others or manage an area of land. You want to demonstrate your skills, perhaps to move into a more senior role or move on to further study.The qualification allows you to combine working for a Horticulture business, such as a Landscape company or a Golf Course or a similar job and typically involves you attending one day a week at College.

About this course

There are no specific prior achievements required to take this Qualification, but a Level 2 oranother Level 3 Qualification in Horticulture or other Land-based related subjects could bean advantage.You need to be 16 years old or over to take this qualification.

Course programme

What will I study on the course?

This Qualification covers a very wide range of areas related to the skills and knowledge required for working in the Horticultural industry.

All learners will cover the mandatory core units of Health and Safety, Estimating Resource Requirements, Managing Your Own Resources and Controlling and Managing Pests, Diseases and Disorders.

You can then take optional units that are relevant to your chosen area of interest in Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces, Production Horticulture, Landscaping, Sports Turf (Greenkeeper) or Sports Turf (Groundsman).

Optional units could include Specify the Maintenance of Landscapes, Plan and Maintain Planted Areas, Plan the Maintenance and Repair of Sports Surfaces, Design Landscape Areas, Propagating Plants, Managing Volunteers and Working With the Community.

The choice of optional units will reflect the work environment that you are in, and the type of role that you are carrying out - we can tailor your qualification towards your chosen career pathway.

Additional information

The course runs for one day per week, the duration varies according to the optional units chosen. At the start of the course we will also review your previous skills and experience and set you an individual target date - the course will take at least one year to complete but the rest is up to you
