About the course

The MSc in Advanced Composite Design is a modular-style course. Fundamentally, the material and delivery methods of the course are industry-driven. Each of the modules will be available in 2-3 week blocks, as well as through e-learning. In this way they can be taken as discrete modules at the point of need by industry.

Modules can be taken purely for professional development, or as credits towards a recognised qualification at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or MSc level.

The full MSc programme covers areas such as composite materials, manufacture, structures, analysis, repair and life cycles.

What you will learn

Our MSc programme is both academically rigorous and vocationally relevant. It has been developed to ensure that it reflects the latest thinking and research in this dynamic area.

We use progressive teaching methods which challenge students and give them the knowledge and skills to cope in a changing world.

A key feature of our teaching and learning strategy is the development of students as independent learners. The emphasis is on personal study, research and individualising module content to address students’ and employers’ areas of interest within the field of advanced composites.

Special features

  • You will have full access to the school's dedicated engineering and product development facilities including a dedicated composite materials laboratory, study areas with WiFi, and a state-of-the-art design studio with design, analysis and simulation software.
  • The team of expert staff is taken from academia and industry; members of the teaching staff carry out current research and consultancy work within the field of advanced materials and have established a good reputation nationally and internationally.
  • These modules have been developed in conjunction with senior industrialists working in the area of composite materials and aerospace sectors, and colleagues at the University of Manchester.

Careers and professional development

The programme is designed to address current and future skills requirements in the composite materials and aerospace sectors. It is envisaged that most students will already be working in these sectors, and the programme is therefore designed to meet their professional development needs.

Successful graduates may choose to continue their studies by registering for a PhD on successful completion of the MSc programme.

On graduation you will automatically become a member of the University’s alumni association, gaining access to a wide range of the University's facilities, including the library, journals and periodicals, as well as professional and employment advice throughout your career.
