About this course

A good honours degree (2.1 or higher) in the computer sciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences or engineering.

English requirements:
* IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components).
* TOEFL 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computer-based test) with a score of not less than 4 in the TWE; or 92 (internet-based test) with not less than 21 in each of the components.

Course programme

Overview

The Advanced Computer Systems is an intensive, full-time programme. The duration of study is 12 months, beginning in September. The programme is divided into two semesters of taught units and a dissertation period.

Many millions of systems are connected to the internet and can thus be approached by diverse software and individual users. Consequently, it is impossible to predict a priori all interactions the systems may have. In the interest of efficiency, the systems should become more intelligent and autonomous, so that they can deal with unexpected events and circumstances. These phenomena can be found in very diverse areas, ranging from multimedia operating in the physical world, to programmes supporting e-commerce.

This programme focuses on the notion of an intelligent agent and the many applications of agents. An agent is defined as an artificial (computer based) entity that can act pro-actively, reactively, autonomously and rationally in a dynamic environment. Agents may reason about the situation they are in, plan their actions, revise their beliefs, learn, communicate, cooperate, etc. depending of their level of sophistication. Emphasis is placed on the logical and symbolic models to describe and implement agents.

Programme Structure

All students follow two core double modules, one in the autumn semester and one in the spring: Formal Methods and Programming (Semester 1) and Research Project Preparation (Semester 2). Students also follow a series of modules specific to the theme on which they are enrolled. There are no option modules.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Students will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods which may include lectures, tutorials, seminars, problem classes and project work. This is an advanced programme and it is expected that students devote a significant amount of time to self-directed learning.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used including coursework, research project proposals, written examinations and the dissertation.

Dissertation

Each student will undertake a project and dissertation from June to September. The second semester unit, Research Project Preparation provides the grounding for the dissertation project and allows students to select and research their chosen project area. The dissertation period starts after the Semester 2 examinations and students are expected to meet regularly with their project supervisor throughout the summer.

The dissertation project will be related to the theme that the student is studying. In most cases the project will be a synthesis of both an analytical and a computational approach to solving, or investigating a substantial computer science problem. However, projects will vary in style; some may be more experimentally-based, others may be purely theoretical. It is expected that several projects will involve external collaboration, as has been the case in previous years.

Career opportunities: The majority of our Masters graduates move directly into computer science careers in software development or consultancy. Employment opportunities are very wide, and our Masters graduates have moved into computing careers in the leading computer companies, major international banks, communication companies, government agencies and educational establishments.
