What will I study?
Some of the skills you will learn are:
Erecting and dismantling working platforms.
Maintaining order in the workshop.
Preparation of materials.
Building walls
Store resources ready for use.
Setting levels.
In addition, you will improve your communication skills in order to deal effectively with customers and your numeracy skills to help you with pricing work, and you will be shown how to use computers. There will be opportunities to visit a range of building sites in order to familiarise yourself with the latest developments.
Will I have to sit any examinations?
You will not sit any examinations but you will be expected to keep photographic evidence of your work and answer questions. You will keep a careful record of your work and, after the tutor has marked it, an external examiner will visit the College to ensure that the standard of work of the whole group is satisfactory. There will be a test in respect of the Safe Working Certificate.
What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the course, you will have an NVQ or ICA Certificate at the level you are studying. You will also be awarded a Health and Safety Certificate (ICS). If you gain the ICA Certificate, you will be able to spend time with an employer at the end of the course and gain an NVQ as well.
What next?
You are qualified to work in the construction industry. Some of our ex-students have won Wales-wide competitions and you too will have opportunities to take part in national competitions.
