Web 3.0 - All About Semantics Semester

  • Week 1: Introduction to Web 3.0

Our first week will give you an introduction to the Web Design course and Web Technologies in general. We will be covering the new tags available in HTML5 and we will be looking at advanced CSS selectors to take advantage of specificity. We will also be exploring more advanced code editors available to web designers.

  • Week 2: HTML5 & CSS3 Extended

In our second week we will be looking at more features of HTML and CSS. We will create a number of small projects to demonstrate the functionality of these new features.

  • Week 3: Mobile First Design

In these lessons we will be discussing principals of Mobile First Design. You will be training to think like a mobile first designer and we will put this to practical use by creating a landing page with mobile first design principles.

  • Week 4: Building a Portfolio Website

In this week we will be building a portfolio website using HTML5 and CSS3. We will be taking all the knowledge gained from the previous weeks to develop our pages with Web 3.0 and mobile first principles at the forefront.

Building with Bootstrap

  • Week 1: The Bootstrap Framework

Now that you have a grasp of the new tags and experience with mobile first design, it’s time to introduce you to frameworks. Bootstrap is a mobile first framework that allows us to get a head start on our projects. In this week we will be looking at the functionality of Bootstrap and the various ways to include the framework in our projects.

  • Week 2: Bootstrap Extended

In our second week we will be looking at more features of Bootstrap. We will have a number of small projects to demonstrate the functionality of these new features.

  • Week 3: The HTML Club 3.0

In this week we will be merging mobile first design with our new found Bootstrap skills to create an extended version of our HTML Club project. This project will make use of a number of Bootstraps features and demonstrate how frameworks can be used to speed up the development of mobile first websites.

  • Week 4: Bootstrap Templates

Not all projects need (or can) be started from a blank editor. In these lessons we will be looking at the Bootstrap templates available to designers. We will use one of these templates to create a small company website to further demonstrate how quickly we can get to finished project using frameworks and templates.

Working with WordPress

  • Week 1: The WordPress Content Management System

A Content Management System is one of the greatest resources available to a web designer. A content management system can take on the role of skills you have yet to acquire and WordPress is the most popular CMS available on the web. In this lesson we will be looking at various ways to incorporate and set up the WordPress CMS on our local machines and online servers.

  • Week 2: Editing Templates and Plugins

In this lesson we will be exploring WordPress themes and plugins. We will be learning how to use these effectively and how to keep your site up-to-date.

  • Week 3: Advanced Templates and Plugins

In our third week we will be exploring how to edit existing themes and plugins. We will also be exploring how to make our own themes and basic plugins for our WordPress developments.

  • Week 4: Building a Company Website

In our final week we will be building an ecommerce company website using the WordPress CMS. This development will follow the six step design process and make use of a range of skills acquired throughout this course.
