The programme builds on the learning conducted during conflict management training, such as the SIA Licensing Unit 2 or equivalent, and provides staff with the knowledge and confidence of what to do and more importantly how to deal with individuals who do not respond to communication, and despite efforts still pose a clear and present danger.

By the end of the workshop the delegate will better able to:

  • Develop a greater working knowledge of the conflict management model.
  • Describe the relevant signs of escalation in subject aggression.
  • Effectively utilise appropriate communications skills in confrontational situations.
  • Evaluate appropriate legislation with regards to use of force and Human Rights.
  • Examine a range of personal management concepts and strategies.
  • Produce detailed statements and records of incidents, accidents and events.
  • Demonstrate the safe, effective and application of a range of ‘reasonable’ and ‘proportionate’ physical intervention and handcuff techniques.
  • Demonstrate the safe, effective and application of a range of handcuffl restraint techniques.
  • Examine the probable & less likely medical implications of all applied technique.
  • Evaluate medical risk factors including positional asphyxia, excited delirium and sickle cell anaemia and alcohol / drug intoxication.
  • Examine the relevant Health & Safety requirement and considerations with regards subject handling and movement.

Award Format:

The award consists of three modular units all of which must be successfully passed in order to be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Physical Intervention and Handcuff Restraint. Each unit comprises of the following modules:

Unit 1:

Legal Powers and Policy, Personal Management - Dynamic Threat Assessment – The Conflict Management Model, Incident Recording and Statement writing.

Unit 2:

Primary Control Skills, Control and Restraint and Breakaway techniques and Associated Medical Implications.

Unit 3:

Handcuff theory, Safe Handcuff Application and Removal, Subject Handling and Associated Medical Implications.

Although predominately practical the programme is evenly balance in terms of theory and practical activities. All course trainers are qualified, both academically and in terms of specific related skills, and will coach and monitor students throughout the programme. Due to the nature of the subject being taught trainer to student ratio will be 1:6. Maximum course number will be set at 12.

Participant Profile:

This workshop has been specifically designed to augment the training currently undertaken to qualify for the SIA licences in all aspects of security. The workshop would be of great benefit to staff who by virtue of their role will have cause to detain and arrest aggressive or potentially violent individuals, remove people for their premise or engage in any potential physical confrontations. Although designed primarily with the security industry in mind this programme is open to all who fulfil the course entry requirements.

Entry Requirements:

Delegates wishing to enter this programme must submit the following evidence of prior learning:

  • Level 2 Conflict Management Award or equivalent
  • Security Industry License or equivalent qualification
  • Two industry references
  • Emergency first aid award or equivalent qualification
  • Experience and/or formal training in physical intervention techniques
  • Additionally entry onto the course will require the delegate to supply evidence that they are medically fit to partake in moderate physical activity, practical ability to perform all techniques to the required level of competence will be required to successfully pass the award.
  • Those who satisfy the above requirements will be accepted onto the programme, once accepted and prior to attendance all delegates will required to complete an assignment of no more than 1000 words (+/- 10%) on a pre-selected subject relating to the use of force.
  • All successful participants will receive an accredited Level 3 ASET Advanced Award in Physical Intervention and Handcuff Restraint.

Training is also accredited by world renowned handcuff manufacturer HIATTS.
