This qualification has been designed to reflect the work of experienced practitioners who work directly with clients, disseminating information, advice and guidance and formal advocacy.

This qualification will provide you with the skills needed to meet ever changing objectives and the opportunity to develop new and recognise existing skills. This in turn will lead to improvements in efficiency and effectiveness throighout the organisation and with clients. This course runs from 12 to 18 months with assessment carried out in the workplace.

What modules are covered?

The full qualification requires the candidate to achieve a minimum of 37 credits and the units on offer are a mixture of mandatory and optional sections. This allows the qualification to be uniquely tailored to the job role of the candidate.

5 mandatory units (which total 17 credits) must be completed - Develop interactions with advice and guidance clients; Manage personal case load; Evaluate and develop own contribution to the service; Operate within networks; Understand importance of legislation and procedures.

A selection of optional units are required from the following, totalling 20 credits which show in the brackets (at least 9 credits must be from level 4 units, and the others can be from any level):

Level 2 - Support clients to make use of the advice and guidance service (3).

Level 3 - Liaise with other services (3); Enable advice and guidance clients to access referral opportunities (3).

Level 4 - Assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action (3); Prepare clients through advice and guidance for the implementation of a course of action (3); Assist clients through advice and guidance to review their achievement of a course of action (3); Provide support for other practitioners (5); Undertake research for the service and its' clients (5); Design information materials for use in the service (4); Provide and maintain information materials for the service (3); Negotiate and maintain service agreements (3); Facilitate learning in groups (3); Prepare and set up mediation (4).

Level 5 - Advocate on behalf of advice and guidance clients (6); Prepare to represent advice and guidance clients in formal proceedings (6); Present cases for advice and guidance clients in formal proceedings (6); Negotiate on behalf of advice and guidance clients (5); Stage and manage the mediation process (8).

How will I be assessed?

All of the qualification will be assessed in the work place by your individual assessor from the College. Your assessor will visit you a minimum of once a month and will assist you in compiling a portfolio of evidence, including competency observations and professional discussions. You may also be advised to carry out some independant research.

What is the entry process?

On reciept of your enquiry you may be contacted by the course co-ordinator who will discuss the course content in relation to your job role, to ensure that this is the most suitable course and level. You will be asked to complete a course nomination form, which may be required prior to the fees being confirmed. You will then be contact by the initial visit assessor who will visit you in the work place to sign you up for your course. In some cases we may also need to speak with your Employer prior to enrolment.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: no qualfications

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however it is advised that the candidate holds an NVQ level 3 in a relevant subject or relevant business and guidance experience.

What else do I need to know?

The course is designed to reflect the activities and responsibilities of candidates who work directly with clients offering information, advice and guidance on a regular basis (either employed or as a volunteer). Candidates might also have some managerial or training responsibilities. It is best suited to those who are creators of information, advice and guidance, either disseminating information themselves as practitioners or through their organisation in the form of publications. Candidates at this level are expected to have a more dynamic relationship with other organisations.

Your assessor will plan your qualification based on your job role, however with the support of your employer you may also be able to develop skills in new areas by taking on additional responsibilities which will assist you in achieving your qualification.

What can I do after this course?

Obtaining this qualification will prove your work based competency within an advice and guidance role, supporting your skills in management and any speciality areas, as well as future job applications within this area.

Progression to HE or full time courses such as BTEC, HNC/HND or Foundation Degrees in relevant areas can be considered. Work based learning is also available in complementary areas such as Customer Service or Business. Candidates may also progress into the Careers Guidance and LDSS (Learning, Development and Support Services) provision.
