Course programme

Air-conditioning systems with an effective output of 12kw or more must be regularly inspected by an energy assessor. As a guideline, CLG have stated that the inspections must be conducted no more than 5 years apart. For all systems put in to service in or after January 2008, then the first inspection will be due 5 years after the install date and put in to service. For all systems, where the effective rated output is more than 12kw, the first inspection must happen by 4th January 2011.

Course Overview

Air conditioning energy assessments are designed to highlight efficiency of the unit to enable the owners to reduce operating costs and carbon emissions. It will also be used for the energy assessor to highlight where a business will benefit from replacing older systems with more energy efficient setups. There are currently Energy efficiency loans ranging from £5000 to £100,000 interest free from the carbon trust.

The course will cover:

  • Unitary packaged systems - indoor and outdoor equipment housed in a single casing
  • Single split packaged systems - outdoor unit to single indoor unit
  • Multi-split packaged systems - outdoor unit directly to multiple indoor units
  • Simple variable refrigerant flow (VRG) systems - outdoor unit to multiple indoor units via a manifold
  • Indoor units - including floor, wall and ceiling mounted units, linked to outdoor units by refrigerant pipe work
  • Controls - including self contained on-board controls for temperature and time

Following this training period, the distance-learning elements of the training are incorporated within two forms of assessment. These require you to:

  • Pass an exam based on the course syllabus.
  • Submit a portfolio of three Air Conditioning Reports on a range of air-conditioning systems. Candidates will be required to produce each one of these ACRs up to current training industry standard.

In order to for you to complete the qualification, we will assign you an internal assessor to provide you with all of the technical support and revision guidance that you will require.

Once the class based training section has been completed, candidates will then have a requirement to produce a portfolio of 3 air con inspections that they have carried out. This will include the ACR certificate that is generated once all relevant information has been programmed in to the software as well as other pieces of standard documentation. The work is then sent to our centre for assessment, which will then lead to an external verifier from our awarding body coming in to the centre to sign candidates off.

Upon completion of the exam and portfolio of three Air Conditioning Reports, you will be awarded your certificate and almost be ready to practice as a qualified Air Conditioning Inspector. Before being able to commence work, you will need to gain accreditation from an accreditation scheme. As this is a relatively new qualification, there are only a handful of schemes available to register through. The accreditation process will be covered fully in the training course.

Exams – 2 multiple choice exams
