This A' Level English Language and Literature Course is ideal for anyone wishing to gain a knowledge and understanding of this subject or for anyone who wishes to study at a higher level at University. You will also find this course extremely valuable if you are looking for a progression route for further training whilst employed.
This course is designed to develop students' knowledge of English Language and Literature as a combined discipline and draw on their experiences at GCSE whilst providing a secure foundation for English studies beyond A' Level.
You will study works of literature that include not only novels but screenplays, such as A Streetcar Named Desire, by Tennessee Williams and All My Sons by Arthur Miller.
This course will teach you to think critically about what you are reading and learn how to analyse each piece, as the works studied will vary and will include both fiction and non-fiction. You will also have the opportunity to work on your own personal writing skills and to improve upon the clarity and sophistication of your writing style.
This course is perfect for this with an interest in English literature and an interest in improving his or her own writing style.

You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this course. This course is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy. You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 18 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Unit 2: Analysing Speech and its Representation
This unit will introduce candidates to the principles of the analysis of speech in a variety of situations. Their analysis will be supplemented by the frameworks learned on Unit 1. These questions test the ability of candidates to:
- use appropriate terminology to support their analysis
- compare different kinds of spoken texts
- analyse set texts with reference to representation of speech as well as exploration of stylistic and thematic issues
- write fluently and coherently.

This unit tests the ability of candidates to:
- use appropriate terminology to support their analysis
- compare different types of text including those from literary and non-literary contexts, and speech

Unit 4: Comparative Analysis through Independent Study
This unit will extend the principles of integrated literary and linguistic analysis by testing the ability of candidates to:
- use appropriate terminology in their analysis
- make comparisons by sustaining a particular line of thinking in relation to the two chosen texts
- produce accurate, fluent and coherent written work
Candidates are required to study at least one poetry text, a genre not available at AS level. Candidates must choose one text from List A; they may then either choose one other text from List A or one text from List B.

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. We call these Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). You need only send the TMAs to your tutor for comment, not the self-assessment exercises which are also part of the course to help you gauge your progress.
Exams are taken at an AQA centre and we can provide an extensive list of centres for you.
