Ancient History

Introduction

The staff and students of the Department of Classics and Ancient History are all engaged in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The department is one of the largest in the country in terms of teaching staff, allowing us to cover a broad chronological range from Homeric Greece to Late Antiquity. Ranked among the best in Britain, the department enjoys an international reputation for the high quality of its original research. This means you can be assured of high-quality, exciting, up-to-the-minute teaching. We welcome about 70 new undergraduates to our department each year.

Assessment
You must complete all written work and pass the first-year examinations in order to enter the second year. The final degree result is partly determined by examinations at the end of the second and third years and partly by second- and third-year coursework, including essays, seminar papers and a dissertation. The proportion of coursework assessment counting towards the final degree is approximately 50%.
