About this course
As part of an advanced level programme, a minimum of 4 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above (or the equivalent) and a minimum of Maths or English at grade D. Grade C in English and/or Maths are desirable but not essential. Grade C or above in Art or Design G.C.S.E. (or equivalent is essential.

Art & Graphics AS and A2
INTRODUCTION
This highly creative and successful course aims to give you the confidence and skills to explore a diverse range of themes and to develop a questioning and analytical attitude. There is a strong emphasis on the teaching of drawing skills and developing underpinning research skills. You are encouraged to explore and experiment through a wide range of Art and Design media. You will be introduced to working with a very multi media approach, from drawing with a sewing machine to print based materials. Observational drawing and recording skills are very important.
AS CONTENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework. 1 externally set practical project.
AS ASSESSMENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework worth 60% of the total AS marks 1 externally set practical project worth 40% of the total AS marks
AS CONTENT
AS content will be extended further plus students will be expected to produce: 1 portfolio of practical coursework including written personal study of a relevant artist/craftsperson/designer or movement (1000 words). 1 externally set practical project.
A2 ASSESSMENT
1 portfolio of practical coursework (including a written personal study) worth 60% of the marks. 1 externally set practical project worth 40% of the marks. 1 portfolio of practical coursework (1 including a written personal study) 1 externally set practical project
ALL AS AND A2 LEVEL WORK WILL INCLUDE:
Drawing and painting. Fashion illustration/graphics (skills acquired through project based learning). Research and development of ideas through a sustained use of sketchbooks. Study of Contemporary Artists/Designers & Craft makers. Introduction and development of a wide range of creative techniques in Graphic/Illustration including some Textiles skills (appli & stitch based skills). Final outcomes will include both Art based & Contemporary Graphical/Illustration ideas. Additional skills developed at A2 include: Contemporary 3D Illustration skills, Screen print techniques, all with a strong emphasis towards a lively and illustrative multi media style of working.

Creativity, imagination and expression are developed from this solid course structure. An extensive range of visiting artists, gallery visits and workshop activities supports the programme of study, and encourage student understanding of the relationship of art and design to broader cultural issues. Students must display a genuine interest in, and a high level of commitment to art and design. Motivation, enthusiasm and passion for study are essential.

The Arts Division at Gateway has an excellent reputation for their courses. Many students progress onto the Foundation Diploma in Art &Design through to HND and BA (Hons) degree courses. The Foundation Diploma at Gateway is an exciting and successful course and welcomes students who have shown commitment through their A level studies. Also this course will be valuable for students wishing to pursue a career related to Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Design Crafts, Contemporary Crafts, Animation, Textiles. This course would enhance the learning of students who wish to follow a broad range of academic subjects, or a range of other Art/design based subjects within the Arts Division.
