AS and A2 level Leisure Studies

Leisure Studies is an interesting and challenging course in which you will investigate the Leisure industry in its entirety. The course will help you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding you need for employment or Higher Education.

WHAT WILL I BE STUDYING
Leisure Studies enables you to gain an understanding of many aspects of the industry. This will include looking at how the industry is run from a business perspective, involving the study of customer service, marketing and human resources. We will also consider the health of the nation and how it impacts on the industry. At A2, you will also have the opportunity to work as part of a team to plan, run and evaluate a leisure and recreation event. Detailed below are the subject modules:

For AS you will study:

·The Industry Today
-
considering the scale, significance and impact of the leisure industry

·A People†s Business*
-
customer care in the leisure industry

·Getting it Right in the Industry
-
health, safety and business systems

Each unit is 33.3% of the AS, and 16.6% of A2

For A2 you will study:

·Leisure in Action
-
running an event

·Working in a People†s Business*
-
employment issues, selection and recruitment

·Current Issues
-
synoptic assessment of an unresolved issue (student†s choice)

Each unit is worth 16.6% of the total A2.

* These units are externally assessed.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN LESSONS?
Listening to visiting speakers, research, interviewing, planning, giving presentations, reporting, group work and using IT all feature in lessons. Trips and residential visits in the UK and abroad form an integral part of the Leisure Studies course.
You will have subject tutors who will help you to plan your workload. The emphasis will be on research and problem solving through assignments which focus on the world of work.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The AS is assessed through two portfolio assignments and one externally assessed assignment which is completed in exam conditions over six hours.
The A2 is assessed via two portfolio assignments and one written examination.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE?
A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or higher, including English (language) and Maths. However we like to look at individual achievements and will consider a range of qualifications and experience. An ability to research information and meet deadlines is important.

WHAT OTHER SUBJECTS CAN I DO WITH LEISURE STUDIES?
Leisure Studies is very much a business orientated course, looking at the industry as a whole, from health and fitness to home-based leisure to arts and entertainment. Any subject can be combined therefore, but Leisure Studies fits particularly well with Business Studies, Physical Education, Psychology, Dance and Modern Foreign Languages.

AFTER THE COURSE?
Many of our students continue their studies in Higher Education on a degree or HND course. If you are not interested in this you could enter employment; we have numerous ex-students who now work in the leisure industry as fitness instructors, personal trainers or gym managers.
