Content AS Level:
Concentrates upon enhancing skills in the basic language of art and design; widening the range by introducing new media and new concepts. Figure Drawing, Sketching "live" in the environment, a trip to visit Galleries in London or Cambridge and options in painting, printmaking, sculpture (to include theatre design, textiles and graphic design on demand) will feature during the year.
A2 Level:
In the second year chosen specialisms will be developed further or students not wishing to specialise may continue with the general programme. This year aims to build upon the experience and confidence built up in Year 1. Students are encouraged to develop an identity as an artist/designer and to gain personal satisfaction from their final body of work. A further day's visit to the Galleries in London, or a major centre completes the programme.
Assessment
Coursework (AS and A2 level): There is a generous coursework component in the syllabus, which allows scope for personal development.
Major Projects/Examination Work (AS and A2 level): The student chooses a topic from the examination paper as the basis for a major piece of work.
Contextual Study (A2 level): Students produce a personal study of "sketch-book" research on a relevant topic (artist/designer/movement/techniques) of their own choice.
Progression Completion of the AS and A2 qualifications will earn the student 'points' to progress to H.E, both outside and inside the disciplines of Art and Design. If the student wishes to progress to a possible career in Art and Design, one year study on a Foundation Course in Art and Design, would be recommended. Additionally, students can progress directly to employment, seeing their experience and qualifications in Art and Design as contributing to a broader, richer education.
Additional Information
The course will be concluded with an exhibition of the work you have produced. The course will build on your experience of perception and expression using many methods and techniques, including painting in oils, printmaking and sculpture in a variety of media. You will be able to experiment with the new technology on offer, such as computer-generated imagery, plastics (2D or 3D) and video. A parallel programme is also devised to complement and extend the BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design and AVCE in Art and Design. Basic tuition in art history will be integrated into your own work. By the end of the course, you should be able to produce exciting work on your own initiative. It is an intensive course, but if you show a high level of commitment you will achieve a very good grade.
