AS and A Level Drama and Theatre Studies
Drama and Theatre Studies provides an opportunity to study plays from the perspective of a performer, director, designer and a critic. It is a predominantly practical course which offers a broad context for you to develop your performance and analytical skills.

What does the course consist of?
In Year 1 you will study units 1 and 2 for an AS Level. In Year 2 you will take units 3 and 4 to complete the full Advanced Level.
Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre (40%)

This involves practical workshop exploration of two texts. For your coursework you will need to write up 'exploration notes' of the practical production processes undertaken with each text. You are also asked to submit a written evaluation of a theatre trip.
All elements of this unit are internally assessed and externally moderated.

Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance (60%)

This unit will focus on your contribution and involvement in both a teacher-directed production as well as a performance of a separate monologue or duologue from a different play. You can choose to be assessed as a performer or as designer. You will also need to submit a record of processes undertaken.
This unit is externally assessed by a visiting examiner

Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic Performance (40%)

Production of a devised piece of theatre which is based on set stimuli. You are required to produce a written record of processes and to complete an evaluation.
This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated)

Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context (60%)

A detailed study of one set play from a director's perspective. This study will be both academic as well as practical. You are also asked to look at the broader implications of live theatrical performance within a historical context. You are allowed to take your own research notes and set text into the examination with you.
This unit is externally assessed by a written examination

What else do I need to know?
We do a lot of practical work involving improvisation and workshop developed ideas. Within these you will learn about the role of the actor, director and the designer and how a production team works. You will need to be able to work with others as well as taking initiative for your own independent research. It is vital that you can organise your time to manage rehearsal demands and that you participate in theatre visits.
We have a well-equipped drama studio and access to video equipment and an edit suite. We also have a full-time AV technician available to assist us with productions and practical examinations.
This course complements many others within the college particularly within the Arts/Humanities areas.
The combination of practical and written skills experienced on this course will equip you for a range of higher education courses. It will also be useful for careers involving communication skills, including teaching, and provides a good base for any theatre-based practical courses.
You will be encouraged to attend to theatre visits and may be asked to contribute to the cost of professional workshops.
