As an apprentice, you could find yourself working in many settings and with a range of different animals. You could be grooming dogs; looking after animals in a pet shop; kennel or cattery duties; caring for rescue animals; sitting and walking dogs; or even taking care of exotic animals.

Your Apprenticeship will vary depending on your employer, but you could learn about implementing monitoring and evaluating plans for the health and welfare of animals, promoting, monitoring and maintaining health, safety and security of the workplace and planning the handling and restraint of animals. You wil work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Work-Based Apprenticeship in Animal Care and if needed, you will have the opportunity to improve your Functional Skills. Employment Rights and Responsibilities training is also a requirement; covered either by induction or embedded within the qualification.

About this course




It is expected that the attendance pattern would be a combination of mainly workplace completion. The attendance pattern will be confirmed at induction but the duration of the programme would be at least 18 months.

Course programme

An Apprenticeship is a national work-based training programme designed for each industry. Apprenticeships are a great way of earning and learning at the same time. Animal Care frameworks are flexible over a range of pathways and have proved to be one of the most popular apprenticeship routes across the UK.
On successful completion of the course you will achhieve a Level 3 Diploma in Work-Based Animal Care. You will also have completed the Employment Rights and Responsibilities certificate.
You will learn through a mix of lectures, practical activities, group work, work-related activities and independent study and research. You will be taught in a well-equipped environment with specialist lecturers. As part of your programme, assessment is on a continuous basis with a number of assessments in each module. Assessments take a variety of forms, such as written reports, essays, designing a product, presentations and group projects.
