This is a one year full time course that focuses on developing skills in companion animal husbandry and handling. The programme enables learners to expand their underpinning knowledge and practical skills with a range of animals in order to enable them to either gain employment in the industry or to progress to further learning and/or training. Throughout the programme learners will have access to a variety of reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and mammals on-campus. As part of the programme learners will also complete Essential Skills and the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification. Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in English and Mathematics and for Welsh language development.

About this course

Progression and Employment:
Learners who successfully complete this course with Merit or above may progress to the Level 3 course. Students may also move directly into a position in the industry; there is an increasing demand for qualified personnel with good practical skills to work in animal enterprises.

Course programme

Programme Features:

  • Learners receive practical instruction in the husbandry and handling of a wide variety of species
  • Work experience forms an important part of the course - learners must spend the equivalent of 4 weeks at a work placement
  • Learning support is provided in class and through the Study Support Centre if required
  • Regular tutorials monitor learner progress


Programme Content:

To achieve the City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care learners are required to complete all of the Mandatory units and a further 3 Optional units.

Mandatory Units:

Maintain Animal Health and Welfare; Undertake Practical Animal Feeding; Maintain Animal Accommodation; Undertake Work Related Experience in the Land-based Industries.

Optional Units:

Understand the Basic Principles of Animal Biology; Introduction to the Principles and Practices of Animal Behaviour and Handling; Contribute to the Care of Exotic Animals.

Additional information

Method of Assessment Assessment is by means of written assignments and practical assessments.
