About this course

Normally a Level 3 qualification (A levels, National Diploma, Advanced National Diploma, ACCESS to Higher Education) to equate to a UCAS tariff of 120 points is required. Mature students with experience are encouraged to apply.

Is this course right for me?

This course enables you to your pursue a career with, or develop your passion for animals, with an emphasis on behaviour or conservation.

What will I be learning?

You would study a selection of core and option modules depending on the pathway you choose. There are two pathways: behavioural science and wildlife and conservation.
Year One modules include: anatomy and physiology; principles of animal behaviour; nutrition; animal husbandry and reproductive science; wildlife management and conservation. Option modules(choose one module from the following): principles of ecology; habitat conservation and ecological sampling.
Year Two modules include: specialist research study; principles of behaviour management and analysis; wildlife and captive animal behaviour; animal health and welfare; domestic animal behaviour.
Year Two option modules (choose one module from the following): marine biology and environmental management; applied zoological science.

How will I learn?

A variety of teaching a learning methods will be used throughout the programme including tutorials, seminars, lectures, workshops, demonstrations, guest speakers, visits and work based learning alongside individual study. Assessment is via a combination of written reports, essays, practical tasks, presentations and examinations.
You will be allocated a Personal Tutor and will have time with him/her every week as part of the programme.

What else might I want to know?

The programme involves working in the environment, so you should be willing to work in all weathers. You will be expected to provide your own waterproofs, Wellingtons and safety boots.It is advisable that you are up to date with your Tetanus vaccinations.

What can I do afterwards?

On successful completion of the two-year foundation degree, you can progress on to the third year of a related BSc degree programme. With this qualification, there are career opportunities within the animal industry working with zoos, local, national or international conservation projects, tourist attractions, DEFRA, or a career in teaching could be a possibility.
