Course programme

Applied AS/A2 in Performing Arts (Dance)
Students of both AS and A2 will study in depth a range of styles including contemporary, jazz, physical theatre and ballet. There is no written examination and all written work is by portfolio including written diaries, power point presentations, and video diaries. The dance department also takes part in youth dance platforms, and several other performance opportunities throughout the year. We also take each year group to a relevant college syllabus production. This year we have seen DV8 Physical Theatre and Henri Oguike. The department is based in the purpose-built Dance Studio which opened in 2006. It includes classrooms and a studio with mirrored walls, special floor and practice bar.

What will I study on this course?
During the course you will produce three works in progress; one in musical theatre style and two in contemporary style. One will be presented to the examination board on DVD. This year we studied Siobhan Davies, Anthony Van Laast (Choreographer for Mamma Mia) and Henri Oguike.

In addition you will produce:
  • a showcase of work for a visiting examiner (a large extract from the dance theatre repertoire)
  • coursework of 2000 - 3000 words on 2 dance organisations
  • A Powerpoint presentation on a job role such as dancer, choreographer or dance teacher; this will be presented to the examination board on DVD

As a Dance student you will be involved in the lively artistic life of the College. There is a major annual dance show, Hot Feet, and dance students contribute to other productions during the year. There are also many opportunities for recreational dance in the Activities Programme.
