BSc(Hons) Applied Computing

Why you should apply for this course.

This course is designed specifically to produce graduates who can apply their knowledge and IT skills to real situations as well as demonstrating strong academic skills. It equips you with the academic and practical skills required to become a professional IT and computing practitioner. You not only know how to do things with computers, but also understand why certain techniques and practices should be adopted and followed. The modules will be assessed through reports, papers and examinations whilst the practical subjects will be assessed through practical application. This combination of academic and applied skills will place you in a strong employability position upon graduation.

As we are situated in and around the Lake District National Park, we have ready access to the outdoors and use it for developing leadership, teams and problem solving.

What is this course about?

Our IT Labs make use of Windows and Linux operating systems, both for Desktop and Server applications. We also use virtualisation technologies to teach concepts such as system configuration and server installation and support. Wherever possible we try to use Open Source applications and promote the development and use of Free and Open Source Software. We do also however make use of industry standard software where appropriate.

During your studies you will work on understanding systems, designing products and programming solutions to solve problems flexibly. You will learn to evaluate the application of computing and IT in industry and business and to apply theory to practice. You will also investigate innovations in mobile working and other fast growing areas such as the use of geographical information systems and open source software. The course also incorporates many opportunities for working on real projects with real clients. This not only increases your experience but also the relevance of the work you do to the current job market.

The methods of assessment are varied. They include coursework, and open book or case study examinations and in the final year a dissertation and a group project from a major part of your studies.
