Course programme

MA Applied Public Policy: Children's and Young People’s Services
Mode: part-time

This part-time course has been developed collaboratively by the Vauxhall Centre for the Study of Crime; the Vulnerable Young People Research Unit; the Social Work, Professional Practice and Law Research Unit; and the Child and Family Research Centre at the University of Bedfordshire, all located within the Institute of Applied Social Research (IASR).

Geared towards the demands of the Government’s ‘2020 Children and Young People’s Workforce Strategy’, the course aims to provide advanced career enhancement opportunities for senior practitioners and managers within children's and young people’s services, as well as for those looking to enter a career in such services.

The course will draw upon the unique range of expertise available within the IASR and the Faculty of Health and Social Studies more broadly. Each unit will be taught by nationally and internationally recognised experts, engaged in cutting-edge, practice and policy-oriented research and scholarship.

The degree has three core units, one focusing on the theories underpinning policy and practice, one addressing current political and policy perspectives on marginalised children, young people and their families and the third which deals with methods of social enquiry and research.

You will also have the opportunity to study topics of interest selected from a range of optional units, including sexual exploitation and the trafficking of children and young people; ‘looked after’ children; working with vulnerable adults and children with problem drug and alcohol use; critical issues in youth justice; and group offending, gangs and violent crime.

In the second second stage of the course you will progress to work on a dissertation, exploring a topic of your own choice.

Areas of study include:

  • Children and young people’s services
  • Child care, fostering and adoption
  • Children and young people’s problem drug and alcohol use
  • Youth justice
  • Sexual exploitation and trafficking
