What are the entry requirements?
You will be assessed on your English and Maths skills at interview. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction where your suitability for the level and type of course you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Entry 3

  • You can read longer pieces of writing and understand the main ideas without help. You can write longer pieces of writing of 100 words or more.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Entry 3

  • You can work with numbers, symbols, and simple diagrams to solve problems. You can add and subtract and do easy multiplication. You can use fractions and simple decimals.


What qualification will I receive?
A nationally recognised award, BTEC Introductory Diploma NVQ Level 1. (Equivalent to four GCSEs D - G).

Where can it lead?
The Introductory Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go on to more advanced courses such as the BTEC First Diploma. With further training or study, you may be able to work in areas based around forensic science, food technology, analytical Science or environmental science.

What will I study?
As well as a BTEC Introductory Diploma you will develop your Key Skills in the areas of communication, application of number and IT. Key Skills are highly valued by employers and universities. You will work towards and begin to learn the skills and attributes needed to work in the Science Industry.

How will I be taught?
You will learn about what engineers and scientists actually do in their jobs. You will learn by doing a variety of activities such as practical work, taking part in discussions, carrying out research and making presentations.

How will I be assessed?
Up to two thirds of the course will be internally assessed through assignments. One third of the course will be internally assessed through an externally set integrated assignment.

What support is available while I am on the course?
There are group tutorials covering such areas as study skills and career guidance. Individual tutorials provide support and guidance. Additional help is available for language and numeracy. There is substantial language support for students whose first language is not English. The College's extensive learning resources are available to all students.
