The Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a two year full-time programme that is equivalent to three A levels. The course consists of 18 units that are delivered across two years allowing you to explore the applications of the three main disciplines of Science: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Other subject areas include Mathematics, Statistics and Psychology.

The course aims to give you the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding by experiencing work across a range of contexts in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.





This course is designed to provide highly specialist work-related qualification in a range of vocational Applied Science sectors. It gives you the knowledge, understanding and skills that you need to prepare for employment in this field. The qualification also provides career development opportunities for those already in work, and through articulation to higher education, degree and professional development programmes provide progression opportunities within the same cognate or related areas of study within universities and other institutions. It attracts UCAS points that equate to similar-sized general qualifications within education institutions within the UK. On successful completion of BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science, you can progress to or within employment and/or continue your study in Applied Science or related vocational area.




You will be required to have gained at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including: Two C grades or above in Science. C grade or above in Mathematics. C grade or above in English.

Course programme

Scientific practical investigations are seen as very important aspect of the course and continue throughout the two years along with critical studies. In your first year, you will have the chance to lay the foundations of your scientific practical skills and techniques. It will include more Chemistry investigations than the other two disciplines, while the second year will focus more on Biological techniques.

Course Assessment Method

Assessment is continuous, at regular intervals, which includes all project work undertaken, throughout the two years of study.
