Course programme

Appraisal interviewing aims to improve the performance of the employee by means of well-prepared, open and honest discussion. Its success depends on the skill and attitude of the appraiser, and that of the appraisee, who should be well briefed on the purpose and process of the appraisal. The appraisal process focuses on behaviours and outcomes, not personality; issues and problems, not subjective gripes; constructive development to improve motivation; and the employee’s growth and performance. Appraisal should take place regularly at least every year, and at most every six months.

This course will enable participants to:
  • Carry out effective appraisal interviews (including 360 degree appraisal)
  • Prepare well using appropriate appraisal techniques and approach
  • Understand and explain the process and benefits of appraisal
  • Apply appreciative enquiry techniques during the appraisal interview
  • Fully understand the techniques for effective praise and criticism
  • Carry out the preparation, interview and follow-up procedures effectively
  • Establish a positive and committed approach to the appraisal
  • Communicate the value of the appraisal process to appraisees
  • Develop and practice interviewing skills by means of Real Play
  • Define and commit to an Interviewing Skills Action Plan
