This course is for anyone who is employed in the animal care industry but who does not yet have a formal qualification at Level 2. You can start the Apprenticeship at any point in the year. We currently offer two pathways - animal care and welfare and dog grooming.If you have a passion for animal care or dog grooming then this is an excellent way to pursue a career in it. The skills and qualifications you will gain will help future career prospects as well as building confidence working with a range of animals. You will be working with animals such as rabbits, reptiles, primates and hoof stock and ensuring their health and welfare needs are met.

About this course

You should have two GCSEs at grade D or above, including English and maths, or a relevant Level 1 qualification and be employed in the animal care industry. Mature students will be considered on their experience and skill, regardless of their qualifications.

Course programme

What will I study on the course?

You will study a range of units including:

Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals

Deliver basic treatments to animals

Select and prepare accommodation for animals

Maintain animal accommodation

Control and restrain animals

Moving animals between locations

Risk assessments and health and safety

Maintain and develop personal performance

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

You will gain valuable practical skills working and engaging with a range of animal species as well as learning methods and theories that are involved in animal care.

Additional information

The course runs for 1 day per week in college and 4 days per week in employment. The duration of the course is 12-18 months and can start at any time of the year to suit you and the employer.
