Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry

As an apprentice you will spend the majority of your week working for an employer and learning in the workplace. You will also usually come in to college for one day a week to gain support from your tutors and learn about the technical aspects of your job role. To achieve the Apprenticeship you will need to complete a number of qualifications including the NVQ Level 2 in Horse Care, a Technical Certificate and Functional Skills* qualifications. To achieve the NVQ 2 in Horse Care you must complete nine units, eight core units and one additional unit selected by the College.
The topics you will study include:
· Prepare and clean stables
· Maintain the health and well-being
of horses
· Prepare horses for use
· Prepare and maintain horses on
grazing land
· Load and unload horses under
supervision
· Maintain effective working
relationships.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed by practical skills tests, observations of you at work and assignments. Tutors will make regular visits to your workplace to conduct reviews of your progress and to ensure that you ar on target to gain your qualifications.

Progression
On successful completion you may: Progress to a Level 3, Advanced Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry together with BHS examinations. Or Progress to a Level 3, BTEC National
Diploma in Horse Management, or another Level 3 course in a different subject area. Or Continue your exciting and rewarding
career in the equine industry. Achieving this Apprenticeship will
give you the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C * You may be exempt if you have recently achieved a good grade in English and Maths at GCSE.

Entry Requirements
