Learners need to be 16 years or above and have a work place in which they are employed for 26 hours a week within health and social care setting. This must be confirmed at interview and a contract drawn up with the Business Team at the College. Ideally applicants will also hold Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English or GCSE D English and Maths, if not, you must have the ability to achieve these within the timescale of your apprenticeship (determined at Initial Assessment). Who is the course for?

This course is intended for staff who are working with adults aged 18 years and over in an approved Health and Social Care setting such as domiciliary care, residential care or social care for 26 hours or more per week. All applicants must undertake an interview with curriculum staff and provide evidence of DBS clearance with their employer demonstrating that they do not have a criminal background which might prevent them from future working with young people or vulnerable adults.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

Learners need to be 16 years or above and have a work place in which they are employed for 26 hours a week within health and social care setting. Ideally applicants will also hold Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English or GCSE D English and Maths, if not, you must have the ability to achieve these within the timescale of your apprenticeship (determined at Initial Assessment).

What will I study on the course?

You will study exciting units including: - Introduction to Duty of Care - Communication - Person Centred Approaches - Equality and Diversity - Safeguarding, and Personal Development. There are also a range of other units which you need to study including a wide variety of optional units which can be tailored to your setting and you can choose which fit in best with your day to day work. For example, a learner working within a setting caring for adults with Dementia may wish to complete the dementia pathway units offered. Your work place will enhance your knowledge and provide you with the competency based elements of the qualification.

How is the course organised

The course runs for 1 day per week or 2 evenings per week over 1 Year incorporating any mandatory English or maths qualifications required as part of your apprenticeship framework.

How will my progress be assessed?

Your progress will be assessed by a range of methods including practical assessments/ observations and written assignments. You will be allocated an assessor who will guide you through your qualification and attend your workplace to observe your practice. You will also be expected to attend sessions at college to maintain contact and to study towards and achieve the English and maths requirements of the apprenticeship which are a mandatory unless you have equivalent, recognised prior achievement. These skills are assessed by online exams.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

As part of your apprenticeship, you will also require to study English and maths at Level 1 unless you have equivalent, recognised prior achievement and you will also complete a qualification in Employment Right and Responsibilties and the Certificate in Preparation to Work in Adult Social Care L2 as part of your framework. You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including Food Safety and First Aid. There is also a chance to do CV workshops and application for jobs workshops as necessary.

After completing the course you could study an Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care Level 3 or Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) Level 3 (work-based) as appropriate.

Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
