Course programme

What will I study on the course?

You will study a range of units depending upon the type of game management your job role includes. This can range from Deer management and control to lowland keeping; vermin control or upland moorland keeping. This qualification covers a very wide range of areas related to the skills and knowledge required for working in the horticultural industry. All leaners cover the mandatory core units of Health and Safety, Working with Others and Developing Personal effectiveness. They will then concentrate upon their particular vocational skills which are based on their normal working tasks. This often includes units such as plan identification and establishment, pruning and maintenance of trees and shrubs, maintenance of grass including sports turf such as Golf courses as well as design and build landscape features. Level 3 units tend to expect a deeper level of competence and knowledge than level two to reflect the management responsibilities and skills required when working at that level.

All learners will cover the mandatory core units of Health and Safety, Working with Others and Developing Personal Performance.

You can then take optional units that are relevant to your chosen area of interest in Horticulture, Production Horticulture, Landscaping, Sports Turf (Greenkeeper), Sports Turf (Groundsman), Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces.

Optional units could include Establishing Plants and Seeds in Soil, Establishing Decorative Amenity Areas, Renovate and Repair Sports Surfaces, Using Machinery or Propagate Plants from Seed.

The choice of optional units will reflect the work environment that you are in, and the type of role that you are carrying out - we can tailor your qualification towards your chosen career pathway.

Additional information

The course runs for one day per week, the duration varies according to the optional units chosen. At the start of the course we will also review your previous skills and experience and set you an individual target date.
