Course programme

Summary: This work based course develops the skills and knowledge needed for a wide range of careers working in schools and learning environments.

Course description: All training on this course is delivered either in the workplace or at college, on a day release basis.
This course develops the skills needed to be an effective employee in the area of teaching and learning in schools. This course is recommended for employees working within this sector who want to gain a qualification through a flexible combination of workshops and assessments in the workplace.
In this course, learning is based around providing support, processes and services that enable the organisation to achieve its objectives and continuously improve its performance for teaching and learning. The recent Education White Paper (November 2010) notes that, "Every member of school staff has an important role to play in ensuring that pupils and students get an excellent education … In the best schools, well-deployed teaching assistants support teachers in achieving excellent results with pupils."
The Advanced Level Apprenticeship is designed for learning support staff with a working role which requires competence in a specialist area and/or across a varied range of responsibilities. They will be working under the direction of a teacher who has overall responsibility for teaching and learning in the classroom. They will contribute to planning, implementing and evaluating learning activities and will work alongside the teacher to support whole class activities, as well as working on their own with individual, or groups of, pupils. Job titles may include: teaching assistant; classroom assistant; learning support assistant; additional needs assistant; pastoral/welfare support assistant; bilingual support assistant; foundation stage assistant; learning guide; learning coach; induction mentor; team leader.
This apprenticeship is built up of a framework consisting of:

C&G Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

C&G Level 2 Award in Functional Skills Mathematics (QCF)

C&G Level 2 Award in Functional Skills English (QCF)

C&G Level 2 Award in Functional Skills in ICT (QCF).
Additional measurable benefits include better team performance, productivity targets met or exceeded, quicker response time and reduced error rates.

Entry requirements: Apprentices who took their GCSEs more than five years ago and did not gain a C grade or above may need to take a literacy and numeracy test. To start the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an level 2 programme. Applicants will also be invited to attend a pre-enrolment interview.
Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16, whether they have just left school or have been working for years. As an apprenticeship is a work based qualification, applicants should either have an employer who has agreed to support them, or be seeking an apprenticeship position through our vacancies list. Once you have secured a position with an employer your training can begin.

Objective: Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

Assessment: Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace with underpinning knowledge delivered in college. Assessment is via a variety of methods, including case studies, assignments, practical assessments and projects.

Academic progression: Academic progression may include continuation to a level 4 qualification or continued development or promotion at work or within the teaching sector, or progression into higher education.

Career progression: Employment opportunities exist within primary, special and secondary schools in both the state and independent sectors and there will be increasing opportunities for apprentices to take on a wider range of responsibilities. Opportunities also exist to move into other roles across the wider children's workforce e.g. child care, play work or youth work. Dependent on the specialist optional units taken, a range of specialist roles may be open to the apprentice.

Costs: Training on the Apprenticeships programme is currently funded for apprentices aged 16 - 18 years at the time of enrolment. An employer contribution is required for those aged either 19+ or who have a level 4 or higher qualification.
