Course programme
Archaeology and Anthropology
Introduction
Our programmes introduce you to the practice, theory and history of archaeology and related disciplines. Each degree aims to equip you with the ability to handle complex data sets and concepts, and to interpret material and literary evidence with lucidity.
Core units comprise theory and practice, and include field trips and fieldwork. Optional units cover specialised periods and regions, from human origins to the present day. These range from Britain, Europe and the Mediterranean to Egypt, Africa and the Americas. We offer units on methods and techniques such as human osteology, environmental archaeology, ceramic analysis and applied anthropology. You will write a dissertation on an original topic in your final year.
Teaching and Learning
Units in the department are primarily lecture-based, although a number incorporate practical elements, such as laboratory or museum work, and field trips. Seminar presentations are introduced during the second year. The field course provides an opportunity to participate in an archaeological excavation or to undertake anthropological fieldwork.
Assessment
Units may be assessed on the basis of essays, exams, notebooks, lab reports, oral and poster presentations, or any combination of these.
