About the subject
Archaeology is concerned with re-creating people's past from earliest times to the present day through the study of their material remains. It encourages economic and social awareness as well providing scope for interaction with the environment. The subject helps develop wide ranging practical and theoretical abilities including:
v communication skills; both written and spoken.
v evaluation and appraisal of evidence.
v recording and research.
v confidence and analytical skills.
Learning Styles
Varied approaches which include presentation of a topic by the tutor, note taking, group work, discussion, practical work, independent research study, visits to sites, videos, slides, workshops and handling of finds and resources.
Subject combinations and progression
As well as being excellent academic preparation for any course at university it crosses boundaries between many disciplines for example: history, geography, sciences, sociology and environmental studies.
It provides the opportunity to develop skills useful in many careers; education, engineering, environmental sciences, leisure/tourism, heritage management, art and design, technology, sociology, psychology and economics are some examples.

Two modular units, each assessed by written papers and a personal study.
4 Settlement and Social Organisation
5 Material Culture, Technology and Economics
6 Personal Study: based on fieldwork or personal research.
