This four-year course is perfect if you want a degree in Architectural Design Technology, but don’t have the standard qualifications. We prepare you for your degree during your Foundation year, bringing you up to speed with academic skills and a firm grounding in the subject. Then you can go on to do the full undergraduate degree.

And it’s an exciting degree to study. The course blends architecture with building engineering, construction technology and management. Our team of architects and civil engineers will equip you with all the skills and knowledge you need for a rewarding career in this important field.

As an architectural technologist, you’ll apply your expertise in building science and technology to architectural and construction projects. About this course

This course will help you develop the skills you need for the world of work. We’ll give you the practical training and theoretical knowledge you need to succeed in architectural design technology.

You’ll learn about the role of the architectural technologist, exploring the ways in which you’ll be working with surveyors, construction managers, planners and others to make a distinctive contribution to successful projects. You’ll also study a whole range of buildings from historic to contemporary to broaden your knowledge.

We’ll guide you through the key principles of the construction industry, including the physical and financial appraisal of buildings, relevant legal principles, how to manage resources, documents and data as well as project management and the fundamentals of design.

You’ll produce designs using industry-standard IT and software, applying your skills to solve problems. As you learn to analyse and evaluate technological information and data, you’ll be expected to produce drawings, visualisations and models for specific tasks.

You’ll also be expected to present your work with a commentary, often working as part of a team to replicate real-life working practices. It’s all about make you industry-ready.

With a degree in architectural design technology, you’ll be perfectly placed to provide the crucial link between architects and other professionals and managers in the construction industry.


Your knowledge of design procedures, technology, professional practice and the business side of procurement and contracts will give you the chance to play a pivotal role in the construction world.


As an architectural technologist, you have a number of options. For example, you could work for an architectural practice, a large construction company, a design consultancy or a local authority or regulatory body. Alternatively, you could work as a freelance or set up your own company.

Whatever path you take, by the time you graduate you’ll have skills and knowledge that will appeal to employers in a number of sectors. Whether you’re interested in high-rise buildings, refurbishments or working for an organisation like the National Trust, you’ll have plenty of options.


You should be able to communicate well verbally, in writing and through drawings or models. You’ll understand the regulatory environment and you’ll be equipped with the practical skills of data collection and analysis. In short, you’ll be on your way to a stimulating career.

OPTIONAL PLACEMENT

This course offers the opportunity of year-long placement between years two and three. If you choose to take this option, you’ll spend your third year on a placement with a relevant company or organisation, adding valuable practical experience to your growing academic knowledge.
The extra placement year means it will take four years to complete your studies, instead of three.
