This course will give you an advanced understanding of architectural model making. You will identify and explore in depth the processes for producing models. Practical techniques will give you a solid grounding in many aspects of model construction. You'll explore a wide range of materials, processes, and machine use. Where applicable, laser cutting and CAD drawing will be outlined and guidance given to achieve the desired result. Plus, you'll be able to use the wood workshop at Central Saint Martins for part of the course.

Course programme

This course is workshop-based. After an initial induction, you will be supported and aided in the design and the finishing of a scale model that is good enough for any model maker's portfolio.

Topics covered

  • You will initially identify a scheme to explore
  • Through a process of discussion and investigation, work out a concept for a model
  • Your concept will take out of many variables such as scale, purpose, materiality, level of detail and abstraction
  • A feasibility study in relation to time frames and costs
  • Through practical workshop techniques, you will aim to produce the project
