This new course encompasses the ‘artistic’ and the ‘scientific’ to create a new generation of architects who are not only architecturally competent and environmentally aware, but also able to explore the spatial poetics with an evidence informed approach, selectively evaluate the design options and quantify building performance, environmental benefits and impact of their designs.
You will develop your creative space and form making, environmental design, technical and analytical skills, as well as your critical thinking and awareness of the wider architectural context. This course will give you professional skills which can be used both in architectural practice and in environmental design consultancy.
Half of your time on the course will be spent on studio-based design activities and half on bioclimatic, historical, cultural, socio-economic and professional studies. All modules have a strong interdisciplinary approach that highlights the added value environmental architects bring to the building industry and to society.
The course is currently pending RIBA validation, though an application for validation has been submitted. The University is confident of gaining successful validation at which point all students who have successfully completed the course will be awarded a RIBA (Part 1) validated qualification required for Professional Registration.

Course programme

Over the three years the course will cover specific subject areas:
Year 1: Sensing the Environment
In the first year you will gain knowledge of architectural design and environmental principles which drive and enhance architectural thinking, and learn the evidence informed approach and the quantification skills enabling you to conduct spatial, environmental and energy performance evaluation of design proposals. You will acquire fundamental skills (technical, design and representation skills) through your personal experience of architectural space.
Typical subject areas covered will include:
Architectural and Environmental Design 1
History and Theory of Architecture and Environmental Design
Environmental Design and Principles of Building Physics
Year 2: Transformation and Application
You will consolidate and apply the architectural and environmental principles and skills acquired in Year 1 to a wider context, moving from the personal space to the remit of the building and its surroundings.
Typical subject areas covered will include:
Architectural and Environmental Design
Architecture, Climate, Environment and Energy
History and Theory of Architecture and Environmental Design
Zero-plus Energy Building Design
Year 3: Stepping out and Making
In your year-long thesis project you will focus on the design of an architectural proposition, making and testing of prototype/component, preparing you to step out into practice with confidence in architectural and environmental design and the use of various advanced building performance prediction and testing tools.
Typical subject areas will include:
Design and Research Brief
Final Thesis Project
Building Performance Analysis
Prototype fabrication and testing
Environmental and Energy Performance Assessment
Professional Practice
Associated careers
This course will give you the professional skills which can be used both in architectural practice and in environmental design consultancy. The design and research issues explored in your final thesis project could also lead to further research to be pursued in the Department of Architecture’s MArch (Part II) and MSc programmes.

Benson is an architectural and built environment practitioner and academic with expertise in Evidence Informed Design (EID), sustainable building construction, advanced building materials and assemblies in new build and retrofit, Benson has been engaged in practice, research and teaching globally since 1996.
Dr Rosa Schiano-Phan, Course Leader of the Architecture and Environmental Design MSc. Rosa has 17 years’ experience in the field of environmental design devoting most of her career to consultancy and research, working for global organisations and with international partners.
Dr Nasser Golzari, architect, academic and practitioner with project experience in the UK and Middle East. Nasser was part of the design team for the project ‘Revitalisation of Birzeit Historic Centre’ in Palestine which has received the Aga Khan award 2014.
Dr Jon Goodbun, architect, academic, practitioner, and cultural theorist. John’s practice focuses on ecological design and spatial interface.
Will McLean, architect, academic, author, leader of the Technical Studies Programme for architectural studies from undergraduate level to the Diploma in Professional Practice (Part III).
Virginia Rammou, Course Leader of the Architectural Technology BSc Honours. Virginia has several years’ experience in undergraduate teaching and interdisciplinary links between architecture and engineering.
Facilities
The course is delivered at our central London Marylebone Campus, which is easily accessible by all forms of public transport.
Design work is developed within dedicated studio spaces. In addition to a state-of-the-art CAD lab, a complete suite of 100 computers has been installed in the design studios to the highest specification and with all the latest software. Together, these facilities offer a wide range of drawing, graphics and video applications. Metalworking and woodworking work-shops, as well as other support facilities are also available. These include the Environmental Laboratory, Fabrication Laboratory launched in April 2015, providing an innovative learning environment offering advanced digital making facilities which enable processes such as ABS and plaster 3D printing, CNC knife cutting, large-scale CNC routing, CNC metal milling and robot fabrication.
The course also makes use of our construction laboratories which contain a wide range of testing equipment for assessing environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, day-lighting, air velocity and sound; and surveying equipment.
