Aromatherapists regularily encounter clients seeking relief from the symptoms of skin conditions. It is no secret that essential oils offer fantastic potential for sufferers of most skin disorders. A large number of skin conditions can be prevented, helped or treated using aromatherapy. The well documented antimicrobial action of essential oils is very helpful in dealing with various skin problems of the skin. In fact, did you know that the effectiveness of some essential oils agains MRSA is well documented? Many essential oils are also well known for their antiinflammatory activity that can ease the inflammation that accompanies many disorders (e.g. eczema) while some (e.g. lavender) can be used successfully to help in healing (formation of new skin cells) and regeneration of the skin.
Skin problems are often associated with other health conditions such as hormonal imbalance or nervous and emotional problems. As essential oils work on a variety of levels they may be particularily effective for such skin problems - they may act to restore a better frame of mind and calm negative emotions combating or helping ease the underlaying issues that often cause 'flare ups' (e.g. eczema, psorisis).
Examples of common skin conditions that seem especially amenable to the use of essential oils are eczema, herpes and fungal infections.
Conventional treatments are not always effective and, in some notable cases, carry severe side-effects, adding to the stress and discomfort already experienced. Aromatherapy is certainly not a cure-all, but it can make a major contribution in the tretament of manay skin disorders.
With the growing interest in aromatherapy, it is important that therapists have a sound knowledge of bio-chemical principles and the ability to apply a range of therapeutic possibilities to the management of skin conditions.
