About this course

Mostly D's at GCSE including GCSE Art and Design. Alternatively a Merit or Distinction at Foundation GNVQ. A portfolio of work will be required at interview and enrolment to demonstrate real interest and aptitude for the subject.

Course Content:
Within the 6 unit course you may cover the following broad areas;
Two dimensional and three dimensional art and design including, fine art, 3D design, graphics, surface pattern/print, IT, art/design critical studies, business and professional practice.
The Key Skills of Communication and Information Technology are an integral part of course.
Of the 6 course units, 2 are externally assessed. The others are assessed internally as portfolio assessment.

You will:
- develop skills, knowledge and understanding in art and design
- have the opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way
- develop Key Skills which are highly valued by employers and educational institutions
- gain confidence through independent learning skills

Teaching Learning Methods:
The course is project based, working as individuals or as a group. Sessions are teacher led with a responsibility on students to continue working in the studios in their own time, and carry out independent research. Students are expected to attend workshop sessions in addition to course tuition. You will continually look at the work of other artists and designers through project work and visits.

The skills developed will be varied. Among them a development of a working knowledge of materials, practices and technology across several art and design disciplines, a development of specialist vocabulary, the knowledge and understanding of the place of art, craft and design in history and contemporary society will be explored through critical studies.

Key Skills:
As well as covering study of Art and Design, this course will enable you to develop Key Skills. They are part of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma and will be an essential part of your future development. The Key Skills you will develop in this course are:

- Communication
- Information Technology

Assessment:
Refer to Course Content. For each unit you will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. You will need a Merit overall in order to progress to the next level, either BTEC Level 3 or AS Level.

Skills & Commitment:
Students embarking on the Level 2 BTEC First Diploma must be extremely motivated, committed and fully prepared to undertake the necessary work, inside and outside of college hours. Students will be expected to produce research, homework and evidence of visits to exhibitions and galleries. It is vital that students attend lessons punctually and regularly, work consistently and meet all set deadlines. Students must be prepared to experiment in a wide variety of areas, to be open minded, questioning, and able to take and give constructive criticism in student group assessments and discussions. Above all, be enthusiastic and enjoy their work.

Cost:
Within the first week of your course you will be required to buy an art kit from the College. This will cost no more than £18 and will include the basic materials necessary for you to work at home, in your study periods and will also include a carrier to enable you to take work home. The department will provide most materials but students may be required to provide more sophisticated materials as their needs arise. Students will be expected to attend exhibitions at London galleries at their own cost.

Progression:
BTEC Level 3 in Art and Design, AS Level course or relevant field of employment in Art and Design.
