Who is this course for? Those wishing to develop their skills in art, craft and design at level 2. Instruction is offered in a variety of creative media by carrying out projects that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. The BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A - C.
Previous knowledge required: You will generally need to have 4 GCSE's at grades D-G,or a Foundation Certificate or equivalent in a related subject, or related work experience. It is important that you have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in art,craft and design, a willingness to explore new ideas and the ability to communicate your ideas effectively. At interview students will be asked to present a portfolio of work. Applications from mature students are welcome.
What will I study? During the course you will develop your skills, understanding and knowledge through project work in a variety of art, craft and design areas. These might include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, surface pattern, photography, graphic design, computer aided art and design and 3D design crafts. The course is delivered in the context of learning about other artists, craftspeople and designers from various times and cultures.
What else will I do? Students will also undertake a BTEC Short Course Diploma in Visual Arts. All students receive tuition in Key Skills and it may be possible for students to undertake a GCSE in Maths or English. There will be visits to galleries and museums and the opportunity to participate in overseas visits. Students will attend presentations by practicing artists, craftspeople or designers and there will be a client-based work experience project.
How will I be assessed? Coursework will be handed in at various stages throughout the course for progress reviews and assessments.
What will I achieve? BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design, BTEC Short Course Diploma in Visual Arts, Key Skills: Information Technology, Communication and A.O.N. OCN units in Induction, Work Experience and Careers.
What can I do afterwards? This qualification will help you prepare for employment in the art, craft and design industries or for further studies at Coleg Powys. Successful candidates can be interviewed for progression to the BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design (3 'A' level equivalent).
