The course aims to give you the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and understanding by experiencing work across a range of contexts in art, craft and design. Drawing is seen as a very important aspect of the course and continues throughout the two years along with critical studies. In the first year you will have the chance of working in a variety of specialist areas to see where your interests and strengths lie.

About this course

You will be required to have gained at least 4 GCSEs (C grade or above) normally including English and at least one Art / Design subject or a Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design at merit level. You will also attend a portfolio interview with a member of the teaching team.

This course can lead to a place on a range of specialist Higher Education courses or a Foundation Diploma in Art

Course programme

The Extended Diploma in Art & Design is a two year full time programme that is equivalent to three A levels. The course consists of 180 credits that are delivered across two years allowing you to explore a range of art and design disciplines. Other subject areas include fashion, 3D, fine art, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, graphic design and ceramics.

In the second year you are expected to make a choice of specialism and the areas that support it. Applications for higher education are also made in the second year and you are given advice as to the direction you should take. The course has a good record of students progressing to higher courses in areas such as fine art, fashion, graphic design, and 3D design both internally and externally.

Course Assessment Method

Assessment is continuous, at regular intervals, which includes all project work undertaken, throughout the two years of study.
