This course forms the first year of an integrated four-year degree programme. It'll give you a progressive hands-on understanding of yourself as a learning practitioner.
You'll share modules and work across disciplines with students on our BA(Hons) Design with a Foundation Year programme. That way, you'll have the flexibility to identify the right pathway for you.
The breadth and diversity of projects allow you to discover, explore and identify your particular direction within the art spectrum. And when you pass the Foundation Year, you're guaranteed entry onto one of our degree awards within the School of Art and Design.
You'll have access to a variety of workshop facilities, including wood, metal, plastics, ceramics, printing, digital imaging and the technology hub.
You'll also experience a wide range of learning, including lectures, individual tutorials, group tutorials, seminars, workshops, problem-based learning, practical work and independent study. Your primary modes of study will be studio and workshop based practice, with scheduled times for independent study.
You'll combine theory with practice to gain a solid understanding of the contexts and issues of art and design. This will provide you with the appropriate research and study skills to complete higher level study with confidence. As the course progresses, you'll develop a proposal for a major project in your chosen area of interest.
The Primary aim of the course is to prepare students for BA Hons Degree Courses within the School of Art and Design at Staffordshire University. Students that successfully complete the Foundation year automatically progress to a range of BA Hons Degree Courses such as BA Hons Fine Art, Design disciplines and Craft.

Course programme

The Art and Design Foundation Year will `bridge the gap' between secondary level study and University level study of a specific art and design discipline. Students enrolled on the Art Foundation Year are effectively taking the first year of a four-year degree programme, and this introductory year establishes modes of study, research and thinking that will equip them for the progressively independent work that their degree course will involve.

Students will enrol on one of the two strands: Art or Design. They will have been advised, at interview, on the most appropriate strand for them, but there is sufficient flexibility across both strands for students to define their route and to therefore transfer from one strand to the other during the course of the year. This is possible because of the common modular structure of the award and also that we recognise that students, although opting for one strand may realise in the early stages, that the other strand is more appropriate for them. The majority of student work will be of a practical nature, but knowledge of theory and critical skills are also of fundamental importance to the contemporary artist/designer.

The common modules will be the Team Project, which will mean students working in cross-disciplinary groups for the first four weeks of the course; Theory and Practice in Art and Design, which will introduce students to the benefits of an informed practice across a range of art and design disciplines and the Major Project, which will be individually negotiated in relation to content. The two modules that will share learning outcomes but differ in content and assessment briefs are Imaging/Production Skills and Ideas Generation & Problem Solving where projects will be framed in ways that allow students on the Design strand to place more emphasis on creative problem solving in responding to design briefs and projects on the Art strand will be more open-ended, encouraging students to develop more self-determined practices.

Students will begin two modules simultaneously: Theory and Practice in Art and Design and the Team Project. Theory and Practice in Art and Design will run for two semesters and will involve a series of lectures (6 to 8), each of which will be delivered by a member of staff from one of the specialist art and design degree courses, outlining the ways in which the work of one contemporary practitioner has been influenced by historical/theoretical/professional contexts. This module will also include a study visit. The Team Project will be a short, intensive module, when cross-disciplinary teams of about four students will work together on a fairly precise creative brief (for example, a banquet on an identified theme, where everything, from the invitation cards to the tableware has to be designed). This will promote a sense of identity for students across the two strands of the Foundation Year as well as fostering interdisciplinary thinking. Once the Team Project has been completed, students will embark on their second practical module for Teaching Block One: Imaging/Production Skills, taking either the art version or the design version, depending on their chosen strand. This module will equip them with a range of practical skills, for example: drawing, using Adobe Creative Suite and some of the equipment in the 3D workshops.

In Teaching Block Two, Theory and Practice in Art and Design will continue and students will embark on their second, strand-specific module: Ideas Generation and Problem solving (either for art or for design). Here, students on the design strand will respond to set briefs, while those on the art strand will initiate projects that begin to define a personal practice. These modules will run for six weeks, after which time students will all embark on their Major Projects. Proposals for these will be developed by students working closely with staff in their chosen areas of specialism.
