Course programme

This course maintains a balance between highly individual development in studio/design practice and a wider creative context. Core studies consist of initial research and development of the project proposal, supported by individual tutorials, presentations of work-in-progress for peer-group review, and feedback from tutors and fellow students.

Recent participants have been architects, ceramicists, fashion designers, typographers, researchers into sustainable design, jewellers, book artists and multimedia designers.

Course structure

The individual projects are carried out in close consultation with tutors. Where appropriate, participants often undertake a self-initiated period of professional practice or research, based outside the university. Lectures, seminars, reviews and assessments take place on Wednesdays.

Areas of study

Core studies are supported by Research Methods and Advanced Studies in Practice, a diverse programme of lectures and events provided by practitioners, historians, critics and other professionals. Varying annually, these also involve the extensive research specialisms in the faculty and its various research centres.

Career and progression opportunities

Recent graduates have successfully started their own businesses or redirected their existing practice. Others have gone on to MPhil/PhD research.
