What is Accounting?
This modular course considers both financial and management accounting issues, from the preparation of final accounting statements to the use of financial data for business decision making. This course is particularly relevant to those considering a career in Accountancy as many of our students gain training contracts at 18 with local accounting firms. It is also a good foundation for any Business or Finance degree.
Will I enjoy this course?
Although Accounting clearly has a numerical basis, there is no need for mathematical ability beyond a good GCSE Level. Indeed, the course can help in developing numerical skills and confidence by using numbers in a specific situation. Accounting students need to be confident when working with numbers and need to be able to work in a logical and methodical way, as techniques have to be learnt and applied in a precise way.
Advanced Extension Awards
The AS & A Level courses on offer in the department are all distinct subject areas and can be studied individually or as a package. There is very little common material, although some ideas may be studied from different perspectives.

For example, a topic such as inflation is considered:

· In Economics where the causes and policy implications for government are covered

· Business Studies would look at the implications for firms, in terms of the need to increase prices and the effect on, for example, international competition

· Accounting would be concerned with the impact on financial records, which may be distorted by the changing value of money

By combining these subjects, students will acquire a deeper understanding and perspective of the issues covered by each.
Progression
All Advanced Level courses are excellent routes for entry to higher education or employment. The courses are highly regarded by employers and university admissions tutors.
