WHY TAKE APPLIED SCIENCE?
This exciting course helps you to understand the world of Applied
Science by looking at applications rather than theories. There is plenty of opportunity to conduct more in-depth practical work and time to complete your own research. It is ideal if you do not want to take a purely academic style A level as it allows you to get the best of both worlds by gaining a respected A level qualification that encompasses the world of work. The course complements other A2 sciences such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Geography. In addition, it links well with vocational courses such as Business or Health and Social Care and is accepted for further study at Degree level and employment in fields such as nursing, environmental sciences and food sciences.
WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
AS - Science at work (portfolio), Analysis at work (portfolio) and Monitoring the activity of the human body (exam). A2 (Units to be confirmed) - Sampling, testing and processing (exam), Investigating the scientists work (portfolio) and Application of biotechnology (portfolio).
WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
For this course you will need to be organised and have excellent attendance as you will need to keep up with the highly demanding coursework element. There will be plenty of opportunity to develop transferable skills such as analysing, critical thinking, evaluation and planning longer practical projects. Activities are included so that you can develop your research, ICT and numeracy skills whilst learning how to present high quality work.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Both the AS and A2 course will comprise two portfolios and one external exam. The AS exam is taken in June and the A2 exam taken in the January.
PRIESTLEY EXTRA
During the course we will make visits to increase our understanding of science in the workplace. Last year we visited Fiddler's Ferry Power Station, Chester Zoo and Solvay Interox and we are currently organising a visit to Manchester Airport. There will be the opportunity to apply for residential courses such as forensic science.
