AS / A2 BUSINESS STUDIES (Applied)

Business Studies is an extremely useful course which looks at many aspects of the Business world: what makes a business successful, how organisations work, how to manage finance, how to write a business plan, what motivates employees and employers.

If you have watched the Apprentice or Dragons Den you will realise that Business skills are relevant to almost all careers. Knowledge of finance is also of practical help in your own budgeting. You will undertake individual tasks as well as working as a member of teams, and you will see business at work through visits and talks by experts.

Why study Business at Paston?

The course is taught by specialist, enthusiastic staff with extensive experience of helping students achieve excellent grades, and strong links with local business. In 2008 Jack Potter achieved a mark in the top 5 nationally for A-level Business.

You can combine Business Studies with a very wide range of other subjects and Business students go on to university to study Law, Business, Management, Science, Languages and many more subjects besides.

Business Studies was great, I learnt a lot about the main aspects of how businesses operate. Making my own business plan was a highlight for me as it enabled me to use my creative skills to attempt to create a viable business. The course also teaches you skills such as interview techniques that will no doubt be vital in the future. Michael Lester (continuing his studies at Paston).

AS Business Studies (Applied)

In AS Business Studies you will:

Investigate a real business and see how it is run reviewing its aims, its marketing and how it is organised.

Look at the people involved in a business and find out about their jobs, and what motivates them. You will also take part as a member of a team in an exciting mock recruitment exercise.

Look at how a
company plans, manages and uses its resources.

Have opportunities to applyyour theory to the real world of business.

Assessment
Two pieces of coursework and a one hour examination.

Entry requirements

A minimum of BBCCC at GCSE including English Language and one of Maths or Science. No previous study of Business is necessary

A2 Business Studies (Applied)

In A2 Business Studies you will build on what you learned in the AS year and study:

Marketing the marketing environment, how you assess your market, and how social, ethical, legal, economic and technological forces influence a business.
Business Planning you will write a Business plan for a new company, product or service.
How businesses are organised, leadership, management skills, how motivation theories are applied in
the workplace.
Assessment

One piece of coursework (the Business plan) and two 1 hour examinations.
