AS / A2 DRAMA AND THEATRE STUDIES

This course is an exciting way for you to explore and perform plays. It is practical way of helping you analyse texts and interpret them in performance. You will develop a thorough understanding of drama and theatre and develop your ability to communicate effectively with others.

You will have the opportunity to :-
  • explore two contrasting plays in workshops
  • develop a an acting performance (a monologue or duologue)
  • work using a design skill (either in mask, puppet, set, lighting or sound)
  • develop & produce a final production
  • develop your analytical and evaluative skills of the process and performance
  • relate your work to theoretical ideas
  • increase your confidence
  • develop excellent communication skills

This subject fits well alongside any other AS subject. It is well thought of by many employers and professions including the police, social work, teaching, journalism, TV , Radio and any work which involves contact with the general public.

The course is taught by Drama specialists who have all worked in professional theatre. You will work in a 150 seater theatre with a full lighting and sound rig.

You will also have the opportunity to be a member of our youth theatre company Far East who produce at least 2 productions and tours every year.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of BBCCC at GCSE, including English Language and one of Maths or Science.

OR At least a Merit at BTEC Level 2 in Performing Arts.

A2 Drama and Theatre Studies

This course gives you the fantastic opportunity to continue to develop and extend your creativity. You have the chance to combine the activities of exploring plays, devising theatre and performing plays. If you are successful on this course you will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly developed analytical skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.

You will have the opportunity to:-
  • develop you practical and analytical skills further
  • work in groups co-operatively.
  • research and develop ideas from a given stimulus
  • devise a unique and original piece of theatre
  • evaluate the rehearsal and performance process
  • perform to an audience
  • work as a performer, playwright or designer
  • relate your ideas to theoretical ideas
  • develop your own ideas as a director
  • develop your own interpretation for a production of a classic play
  • work at a high level of intellectual engagement

Assessment

Practical examination and a written examinations.

Entry requirements

We will expect you to have achieved at least a grade D at AS in this subject

Many of our students go on to study Drama and Theatre at universities such as Lancaster, Hull, Leicester, King Alfreds Winchester, Kent, Warwick & Exeter.
