Why should I study Drama at Cardinal Newman College?
Our students achieve excellent results and there are outstanding performance opportunities - an unrivalled combination that is unmatched in the area. We are proud of our twenty year heritage of producing exciting and challenging theatre and place a strong emphasis on creativity and individuality, giving everyone a chance to develop their individual skills. There are on average about twenty shows a year between September and June and whilst most of our performances take place in our suite of performance studios at the College. Students are involved in the Colleges' very own theatre company, Limelights, which stages a major showcase production at the Charter Theatre in the Guild Hall in Preston.
The Lancashire Evening Post critic described a recent production as being "performed with flair, enthusiasm and professionalism. A marvellous show delivered with panache. One of the best shows I've seen in ages".
Will I enjot this subject?
It is useful to have taken Drama at GCSE Level but not essential. It is important that you are interested in gaining a greater understanding of how theatre and plays work and that you are keen to be involved with performances.
What skills will I need?
This course combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all these elements. The course will help you to develop a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.
What will I be doing throughout the course?
In total you will cover four units - two in the first year and two in the second. During the first year you will study:
· Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre You will explore at least two plays (by one or more playwrights) and the work of some famous theatre directors or theatre companies. You will be assessed on both your practical work and notes that you keep about what you have learnt about the two plays, as well as a written evaluation of a live theatre performance.
· Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance You will contribute to the performance of a play as either a performer or as a designer of lighting, sound, set, mask or costume. You will also perform either a monologue or duologue from a different play. Your assessment for this unit will be a practical exam.
During the second year you will study two more units:
· Unit 3: Exploration of Dramatic Performance You will create an original and unique piece of theatre as part of a group. You will be assessed on the final performance in front of an audience as well as a written analysis of your research and development as well as an evaluation of the process and performance.
· Unit 4: Theatre Text in Context You will study one play from the point of view of a director and will explore the text in both a practical and academic way. Students will also study a second text from a specific period of theatre history and will watch a live performance of this play in order to compare it to the original performance conditions. The assessment for this unit will take the form of a written exam.
